Studio portraits

I usually prefer observing people, letting them be themselves, capture the emotion, their unique beauty. I also prefer natural light to flash and being outdoors, but here are some studio photos I have taken recently. Isn’t Kajol just adorable?

Butterflies

I like Facebook and find it very useful to discover beautiful, inspiring images. One page I like is called Our Beautiful World and Universe. I enjoy seeing images of nature, from sea insects to stars, with many plants, flowers, and animals in between. One day I realised I could contribute! so I’ve been posting photos and here there are all in one place. So far, butterflies.

Birth- again

Ok I have blogged about it before but it was THE most amazing photographic experience so allow me. I blogged about Alex’s birth last year and included a few photos. This week I entered a photo award where I had to submit a body of work with some congruence, so I entered these photos. I don’t know if I’ll win but I really enjoyed reworking the photos. Let me know what you think.

Winter!

Being from the South of France, I didn’t really mind that we had not had a winter so far, but when it arrived I was reminded of how beautiful it can be! I used to live in Switzerland and there I discovered the poetry of snow.

So, full of excitement, whithe the kids still asleep, I went out.. and couldn’t get the car out of the driveway. Undeterred, I went for a long walk along Loughborough canal up to Dishley Pool, and walked back on the road for a different feel of the snow. This is what I saw:

Kids kids kids

I like kids. Well, usually. I trained as a primary teacher and I never cease to marvel at the miracle of growing up. With my kids I enjoyed every phase. Well nearly. But I always seemd to think their age was the best age ever, whatever the age. They’re teens now and I still enjoy them! But I also enjoy younger ones. Photographing Alex’s birth last year was one of the hightlights of my life I think, and I love watching kids, in parks, in the street..  for honourable reasons! I love how they lose themselves in a different world, how they interact or not…  My first photo publication was a book of photographs I had taken of the Summerhill kids- yes, for people who know about Summerhill, I worked there! and that’s an honour too.

Anyway, today: kids portraits.

Maternity shoot with little brother

Maternity shoots are lovely. They can be kind of contemplative, this magical life growing inside, it’s so beautiful.. but when another child is involved the pace can be quite different!  Running after a 2 year old makes it a different kind of shoot. That day we had studio lights set up in one room, and games in another one, so Thiebault only had to spend about 5 minutes in the lighting room, and he was so careful around the sires, it was impressive. The toys he preferred? The pegs.

Baby in a case!

Babies are great, and this one , at 8 months, is really good to photograph: he is not too mobile yet so can’t run away.  He gets really interested by his environemnt so he tasted the wild garlic around him, pulled faces but tried again, intrigued! An old suitcase is a good way to contain him, and do unusual photos, although it’s not necessary, his interactions with his parents are lovely too, many opportunities to take lovely portraits and create great memories.

Party girl!

Jemima likes to party, she has unending energy and creativity. I had great fun with her, we read stories, went on magical trips, and swam in mysterious pools..

80s Rhythm Revellers

The Rhythm Revellers are a really energetic band who gets everyone dancing. They have different sets, from Jazz to Just out music, and also have a whole 80s set, with costumes, slideshow..  People just go: oh yes I remember that.. and dance their heart out. Great! Here some photos taken before one rehearsal.

Alex and Elyna at the Park

It was a cold, grey day but we managed to squeeze some photos at home and at the park, in Oadby, Leicester, before all light disapeared.

Geneve, Geneva

This summer we had half a day in Geneva, I used to live in Switzerland a long time ago and I was really happy to dip in again, with my kids and husband this time. I took lots of photos but the ones that stayed- I edit a lot too, it’s a must!- are the photos of the Cathedral, a truly beautiful church and a wonderful escape from shops and heat.  I include 2 other photos, one of an orthodox church because I love their shapes and sheer abundance of gold and decorations, the incense and the ceremonies in languages I don’t understand, it seems to go straigt to my heart. I also loved how Geneva was green and village-like, very friendly.

England in Autumn

I love traveling and I love the sun so I do post a lot of photos form the South, but I have been in England half of my life now- sounds strange everytime I say this!- and I love it too. Not just the people who are lovely usually, tolerant and  tactful, welcoming and innovative.. I could go on. I love the nature too. I come from Provence where trees are a disappearing species, between the heat and the fires.. where every green thing is concentrated in smlee and size, rhododhendrons don’t reach your knees, thyme smells like a tincture.. so the first thing that comes to mind when I think of the wonderful nature here are oaks. I love oaks in all seasons, their silhouettes in winr, intricate and so black; their sweet green leavs in spring, so light and fresh for such a big tree, their canopy in summer, dark green, a mature crown, and their golden mane in autumn.. so an hommage to trees and autumn. Some of thses photos have been taken In Swithland Woods, near Loughborough, others in Derbyshire, near Chatsworth.

Kids portraits in Aix en Provence

Place d’Albertas is one of the most picturesque squares I know and it gets visited by hords of tourists, who all take a photo by the fountain, but even without the details, the light there is warm and so gorgeous it reflects on children’s skins beautifully. Look.

Summer travels in the South of France

More travel photography, buildings and people, street photography and general admiration of the beauty of details, architecture, people, patterns.. I am so grateful that I see and that I enjoy looking. I truly get a lot of happiness from looking, seeing, discovering! South of France photographs, once more, where my roots are.

Aix en Provence, my home town

Last time I went to visit I decided to play tourist. There is a lot to see, it is truly a beautiful city, akin to and twinned wtih Bath. There is a lot more to see than here, but here is a taste of Aix in October.

Camargue Horses

I am a people photographer but first I am a photographer and it is my way of celebrating the wonders of the world, big and small. So I love nature, animals, and Camargue horses have a special place for me because there are herds of wild horses, not all of them are wild but it is inspiring to see them. Here are a few of them.

Sete, South of France, summer

Tidying up this year’s photos, I find some I meant to work on and never did, so, out of season, a summer trip to Sete, lovely town I had never visited, a detour to meet some friends from England.

I love Marianna’s cakes and she is very lovely too. I really wanted to see her at work, and, ok yes, taste her work too! So I went to her lovely home in Leicester and watched her do her thing, while doing mine: taking photos. She makes it seem so easy, doesn’t she?

Find her on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-Cake-Queen/178433012202182?ref=ts#!/pages/The-Cake-Queen/178433012202182

If you are in Leicester, do ask her for a cake. My favourites are the football chocolate cake, the tiramisu and the nutella cupcakes..  but she has an infinite variety of flavours and does amazing decorations!

My sister’s kitchen!

I know, what a strange subject for a photography blog!  but last time I visited I realised how much I love this tiny, cramped space, full of stories. Everything has a story to tell, a person, a place and moment, dear to her heart and the mix is just delightful, suprising and impossible to interpret.  She is also a great cook, full of imagination and creativity in the tiniest space, she even makes her own pasta, true to our Italian blood.

Enlace in Valencia, Wedding in Valencia, Spain

What a fabulous wedding! Full of challenges, emotions and surprises.

To be truthfull I was nervous! with a wedding starting at 18:00, I was worried about the light. I do prefer natural light so I knew I had to act fast and then make the most of flash.

The ceremony was beautiful, with each word chosen by the couple and many friends and family participating.  The reception was great with very animated groups of friends who would suddenly demand a kiss, a visit to the table… The most surprising was when all the male friends of the groom took him out for a friendly walk, then pounced on him and undressed him fully! They wanted to throw him in the pool but didn’t. He had to take refuge in the loos while his friends took his clothes back to the bride. I walked with her to the loos and heard a little scream when he saw me: not the camera! I only saw the end of his nose, promise.

Another funny moment was when the couple were opening their presents there was Valencian rice- they are moving to England for 3 years- but the couple saw a great opportunity to take revenge on their friends who had thrown rice at them after the church, as well as rose petals.

The  cake was presented in the most fairy-tale like trolley, incredibly illuminated, and the party went on very late so I had fun taking some very low light photos.

Valencia

People ask me: what kind of photography do you do? it always surprises me, because I am happy photographing most things. Ok I am not too keen on product photography but I am sure I could get into it. I love photography and I am lways happy discovering new aspects of it. I give myself challenges just for fun..

I tend to take photos of people, because they are infinitely changing and interesting and moving, because I can have a relationship with them and indeed I keep thinking about people I photographed. I spent much longer with them than they with me! because I spent time working on their photos, seeing the close up etc. So their faces are engraved in my mind. I wish them well, all of them.

But while travelling I feel a bit awkward taking photos of people, sometimes it’s easy, sometimes I wish I could take a photo just by staring. I like people so I don’t want them to feel invaded or ill at ease. Kids are fun, they don’t mind, they play with me, and I like kids- I trained as a primary teacher- so I often take photos of kids in the streets.  But I also like looking at a place and really seeing it, without judgement, looking for its particular beauty.

Here are some photos I took in Valencia although I had very little time to do so.

Narvatri at the Maher Centre Loughborough

I love Indian ceremonies, full of colours, smells, beautiful singing.. I love the rituals in any culture because they are steeped in tradition and symbols. A festival of dance seems to me a great way to honour the Divine. So when some friends suggested I came along to the first day- one out of nine!- I was more than happy to. I only took a few glimpses, not wanting to intrude too much, but I knew many people there and I felt warmly welcomed. Thank you everyone.

Some of these are getting printed into greeting cards as Diwali is approaching soon.

Family photoshoot at Rushcliffe Park, Nottingham

It was Jenny’s birthday and it was a perfect day. The children had fun exploring the various areas of this park, including some with giant wooden sculptures. It was such a fun, relaxed experience, and even gathering the whole family didn’t result in unnatural, stilted photos, the kids are far too alive for this. And with so many photos to choose from, Jenny decided that the best way was to get an album.

Teens in a Wood

Reluctant teenagers for a photoshoot?  We took a guitar, cameras, took photos of each other, had fun, played about and got great shots. My photography isn’t about being a fly on the wall, it’s about observing but also about rapport, relationships, emotions. And, like it or not, I am part of the picture, so my aim is to engage people as well as to encourage them to interact.

Disappearing glaciers

La Mer de Glace, the Sea of Ice, I remember going to see it one misty morning in the late 1980s, and I saw.. not a lot, but I could feel it not far from the terrasse, I saw a bit and only guessed at its immensity.

This week I took my kids to see it, one of the largest glaciers in Europe. It wasn’t there, not where it was anyway, it was way way down, and climbing down the 400 stairs I saw the landmarks: the glacier was here in 1980, 1990, 2000, 2003, 2005.. scarier that a lecture on global warming.

Still the ice blue is magical, its depth an ocean of peace and mystery, echoes of times long gone..  And glaciers do come back. The second one we saw Glacier des Bossons has come and gone like a yo-you for centuries.

I am glad my children saw them, so they can tell their children about them.

Family portraits in nature

Having fun is definitively a great way to relax! So a walk in the  Haute Savoie countryside, with some climbing, swimming in a natural pool- even jumping from high up! was an excellent way to spend a fun afternoon and capture beautiful, natural expressions.

A very small man

Following Jerome around in Gers has been great fun. He loves it all, is curious about everything and is afraid of nothing. We explored a wooden hut, had fun on the trampoling, looked for cats- his greatest love after his mum and auntie. When he got tired he was all soft and cuddly. I love getting on kids’ level and seeing the world through their eyes, it’s fresh, fun and endlessly interesting.
